In 2014, the Bavarian Mint released this remarkable silver coin as the 16th installment to its acclaimed “African Wildlife” coin series. The series was originally commissioned by Somalia’s government in 1999. Prominently showcased on the front of the coin is a bull elephant, trudging through the tall grass of the African plains, perhaps in search of a tree for shelter from the scorching heat. In the distance, viewers can observe another member of its herd, accompanied by its young calf.
